Satellite and in-situ observations, combined with high resolution numerical ocean models, have brought advances in the knowledge of global ocean surface dynamics. Characterised by a large number of mesoscale (~100 km) and sub-mesoscale (<~10 km) meandering surface currents and eddies, the challenge is to accurately quantify the surface current associated with these features. Multi-variable observations from past and presently operating remote sensing satellite sensors, including altimeters, gradiometers, scatterometers, SAR, IR and passive microwave radiometers and spectrometers provide information on various aspects of the ocean surface currents.
The ESA-funded GlobCurrent project has worked steadily to provide a synergistic combination of these multiple sensing technologies and their differing depth dependency together with a range of processing methods and tools. This final User Consultation Meeting will demonstrate and review GlobCurrent data sets, tools and validation activities. Case Studies using Globcurrent outputs will be highlighted. The meeting is open to International scientists, Industry and Institutions having an interest in Ocean Surface Current measurements from space, and will include a mix of plenary presentations, breakout groups and training activities focused on new products and services developed by the GlobCurrent Project. The outcomes of the meeting will be used to prioritise potential future activities to further improve estimates of ocean surface current from Earth Observation synergy.
